EDITOR'S LETTER

Which festivals are you going to this month? If you haven’t been to any so far this year, there’s still time to see a mega line-up of acts... V Festival, Reading and Leeds, South West Four weekender and the LED festival will cover all bases of rock and electronica, plus you have many other mini festivals around the country lighting the way. And what’s making it especially good this year are the head-turners appearing at the music parades: Leftfield are headlining LED, The Libertines are back for Reading and Leeds, and Salt ’n’ Pepa are sure to go down a storm at SWF. Everything leading up to the bank holiday weekend is looking hot.

Elsewhere on the social landscape there is an abundance of activity across the main summer month, including: The Urban Beach in Lyric Square, which features a makeshift beach complete with deckchairs, musical performances, circus acts, live screenings, street performers and, of course, ice cream. Also, London Zoo in Regent’s Park hosts ‘Zoo Lates’ every Friday in August where, as well as seeing all the wildlife, you can sip Pimms and mojitos, enjoy the champagne and seafood bar, tuck into the barbecue, and strut your stuff in the silent disco so that all you party animals don’t disturb the other ones. And until the 22nd, 100 ping-pong tables have popped up at various locations across London (aptly named ‘Ping!’), plus there are mini masterclasses by the English Table Tennis Association to help you with your forehand smash.

Samples of the nightlife scene: Buddha Lounge in Romford continues the quality theme, with their stellar line-up running from Atomic Thursdays to the all-star guest DJs on the Saturday; Lizard Lounge in South Woodford creates a buzz throughout the week with their live acoustic acts then DJs on the weekend, all the while serving up cocktails and a superior fusion tapas menu; Club Warehouse is celebrating its 19th birthday at the end of August, which will entertain its fans in superglam style; and Sidney’s in Gants Hill is the perfect venue for either post-work drinks or partying ’til late where the music is always offering something different.

So, in between all the weddings and family functions some of you have to go to over the next couple of weeks, make the most of what summer we have left. Enjoy.

Thursday 5th August, Lizard Lounge, South Woodford:
Hello to the girl with the sunshine smile. Had a really stressful week at work and thought I’d pop down to Lizard Lounge for a few beers and see my mates. Glad I did because you were there which now tells me I was meant to go. I don’t know your name but remember you wearing a short blue leather jacket, had blonde hair and noticed me looking at you when you were at the bar. I was sat down with my two friends John and Sarah, and had a Franklin & Marshall T-shirt on. Don’t know why but I winked at you. Embarrassing yes, but it was a compliment and hopefully you’ll remember me. The name’s Chris.

Friday 6th August, Railway Tavern, Buckhurst Hill:
A quiet drink can often turn into something better if the vibe is right. You and your friends came in to the pub last Friday and you had an instant effect on me. I admired you from a slight distance for most of the evening. You seemed like the sensible one of the group, which attracted me as I don’t do loud and lairy. When you went outside for a cigarette you politely moved me out of your way and said “excuse me gorgeous” then looked me straight in the eye. I know that look, which was the same look you gave me when you came back in. My name is Martine and would love to go out with you some time... if you ask me, that is.

Tuesday 10th August, Loughton train station:
Five times now (I’ve been counting) I have literally bumped into you walking through the barriers at Loughton station. We always acknowledge each other but never speak. Maybe I’m nervous because I like you. When we get to the stairs you always go eastbound and I go west. It’s like watching a romantic movie waiting for someone to say something. I don’t see you every day but the last time was last week on the Tuesday (10th Aug). You had on a white summer dress, I was wearing a check shirt and had a Gola bag. So in the wise words of Lenny Kravitz, are you gonna go my way?

Chancer Four
Saturday 14th August, Funky Mojoes, Woodford:
Please help me! If you don’t go out with me my coupled-up mates will dump me for being the odd singleton in the group. Not only do you owe it to me, you owe it to yourself to be seen with one of the hottest girls in town. Legs up to here, hair down to there... I think men find me unapproachable, so I’m approaching you handsome. You were giving me the eye in Funky Mojoes the other night and definitely checking out my pins, and I didn’t see a girlfriend on your arm. You know who you are PAUL! We both appear available and too hot to handle, so why don’t we help each other out?

Dos and don’ts:
Keep it brief, keep it clean. Over 18s only.

Essex and the City

Even though he’s no longer with us, I’m still slightly obsessed with Corey Haim. Every now and then I Google image him and trawl through pictures, pondering how my life would have turned out if ‘Just 17’ actually had taken my begging letters seriously and we had got married. It doesn’t seem quite right that at 31, I’m still looking longingly at what are basically pictures of a 16 year old boy. I don’t know why I still love him but I think I still do and what’s even sillier is that I’ve actually met him (see article 28 or something) and spoken to him and I didn’t have those warm fuzzy feelings towards him like I thought I would have. Instead I thought he was a bit…well….odd (god rest his soul). I’m sharing my weird obsession for a teenager with you because I think there’s a lesson to be learned, the first clearly to get a more adult (even legal) crush, and the second to analyse why it is that we call totally fall for someone that we don’t know? I shall explain.
Every now and then we fall for people with very little evidence of who they really are, we get so carried away with this prospect that that this might in fact be ‘the one’ - we end up convincing ourselves they are, when really they’re not. Thinking like this causes a lot of damage and you can reach a point where no matter how ugly and blatant the real truth about the person you’re with is you just tend to ignore it. I don’t now why we do it, desperation? Social pressure to be part of a ‘we’? Or perhaps its ego and that fact that you daren’t admit to yourself that you’ve actually pinned all your hopes and dreams on someone who’s turned out to be a bit of an idiot and there’s no turning back.
